Hearth

Hearth

It seems so unreal what I begin to feel
And yet a few kind words is all it takes
To comfort my soul, to liberate
My heart, my Love, from this 'time and space'
Beyond distractions to an effortless escape
Where the stars abound and the fireside awaits

Yet from all the fears whence came these tears
Those moments of feeling, flesh out the years.
We fall through space, we fly through time
To be in that place, where love is sublime.
Yet, kindness comes, and we understand
Only truth and love have full command!

The hearth fire on which this axis turns
Is the heart that warms and the love that burns
And when beyond the stars we leap,
We find no longer shall we weep,
But stay awhile in love's lost room
In the splendour of our own bright moon.

Going beyond the Seas

To Lucasta, Going beyond the Seas

If to be absent were to be
Away from thee;
Or that when I am gone
You or I were alone;
Then, my Lucasta, might I crave
Pity from blustering wind or swallowing wave.

Though seas and land betwixt us both,
Our faith and troth,
Like separated souls,
All time and space control:
Above the highest sphere we meet
Unseen, unknown, and greet as Angels greet.

So then we do anticipate
Our after-fate,
And are alive i' the skies,
If thus our lips and eyes
Can speak like spirits unconfined
In Heaven, their earthy bodies left behind.

Colonel Richard Lovelace (1618-57)

To my friend who lives across the sea.
